If you drive past the corner of Middlebelt and Square Lake Rd you have passed Dollar Lake in W Bloomfield. You will probably never even noticed the lake because it is a very small lake. It is a pond. It is a private non all sports lake. If you are looking for a lake to put a pontoon or speed boat on this is not the lake. There are only 10 West Bloomfield homes on it. There are several lakes in Oakland County that are called Dollar Lake.
The characteristics of the lakefront homes on Dollar Lake are:
- The homes were built between 1958 and 1974
- 1-3+ bathrooms
- 3-5 bedroom homes
- 2 car garages
- Ranch, colonial, and contemporary home styles
- Some homes have basements, some do not. Some of the basements are walkout.
- 1300-3100 square foot homes
The lakefront home data above is not perfect. I researched all this home information from 20 years of MLS listings that have been sold. So there are some condos or homes that have not been sold in the last 20 years that I have no information on. There may be bigger or smaller homes out there. This is just to give you an idea of what some of the waterfront homes and condominiums are like.
The homes have septic fields and municipal water. The school system for the lake is Pontiac Schools. The roads around the lake are paved. It is a paddle lake for kayaks, canoes, and paddle boats.
If you have the dream of living on the lake I can tell you it is a great way of life. Sometimes you wake up late at night and you can see the moon light dancing off the lake. The mist rising off the lake on cool fall mornings is another Mother Nature sight. Or the fog rolling across the lake. Sometimes you can’t see the lake at all because of the fog and then it slowly appears. Watching Mother Nature on your lake is special.

One of the best things about buying a lake house in Bloomfield or West Bloomfield is that you "should" get a good return on your money. When buying a lake home it usually is a good investment if you buy right and not over spend or over build. Lake home prices usually drop less during a correction or recession. They seem to hold their value better. One of the reasons is that they are just no building more lakes around metro Detroit. The number of lakefront properties is not going to increase. So for all those home buyers that do not want to drive hours up north or want to be close to work a SE Michigan lake home is their best option. Demand for metro Detroit lake homes will always be strong. They do not turn over as often as other homes. It usually is a good investment not including that your quality of life will go up.
