There are many beautiful lakes in Bloomfield MI. I am going to include Bloomfield Hills lakes and lakes in Bloomfield Township. You will find both little lakes that are no bigger than a pond all the way up to some nice bigger all sports lakes. Bloomfield Township actually has a nice chain of lakes which is rare in Oakland County. There are only two other small chains of lakes in Oakland County. I believe that Bloomfield’s chain is one of the best. Upper Long Lake, Lower Long Lake, and Forest Lake is a great chain to live on.
Bloomfield Hills Lakes & Lake Houses
So what is the city of Bloomfield Hills like? Bloomfield Hills is just a small city that is only about five square miles in size. It is completely surrounded by Bloomfield Township. Much of the city is residential and known for being a prestigious city. It has many large estate style homes and luxurious mansions in beautiful settings. Many of the homes are on larger lots and surrounded by mature tall trees.
How many lakes are there and what are the chances of finding a nice lake home in Bloomfield Hills? Let's start off with only about eight percent of the city is water. There are only a few named lakes in the area. They are Vhay Lake, Lake Placid, Endicott Lake, Kern Lake, Shorewood Lake (a small part of it lies in the city and Kingswood Lake that lies in the Cranbrook School grounds. The lake homes are high-end and exclusive. They are similar in that they are all private, non all sports lakes that are pond like lakes or very little lakes. So they do not offer boating or activities like tubing, or skiing. However there are many other ways to indulge in various types of waterfront living such as swimming, fishing, and wildlife watching. Living on any size lake makes life a little better. Something about being near water gives the home owners happiness.
Bloomfield Township Lakes & Lake Houses
Bloomfield Twp is an urban community that straddles Telegraph Road which is a main thoroughfare that will make the commute from your lake home much easier. The waterfront homes in the township are well-manicured and many times have larger lots than some of the other Oakland County communities. Bloomfield Township is characterized by rolling hills, winding roads, scenic lakes and streams. There is a chain of Lakes in the township that includes Forest, Lower Long, and Upper Long Lakes. There are only two all sports lakes in the township and all of the lakes are private lakes. Lake home owners use the lakes for a number of recreational pursuits, including bird watching, swimming, fishing, and boating if the lake is big enough.

There are so many little lakes in Bloomfield. Many of them I would call ponds or large ponds. They are not big enough to be an all sports lake by any means. You couldn't put a 20' speed boat or a 20' pontoon on many of the lakes. They are good for kayaking, canoeing, or paddle boats. Many of them I have no depths for so I don't even know if they are good for swimming. They may be too mucky for swimming. But here is a complete list of lake sizes in Bloomfield and the depths of the local lakes.
Fishing on many of these Bloomfield lakes is usually pretty good. Most people on the lakes do catch and release. Fishing is usually better on lakes that have little or no boat traffic. I bet there are some big fish in some of these small lakes. Especially if they have natural areas where the fish can hide and grow.
There are only 2 all sports lakes in Bloomfield Township.....Upper Long Lake and Square Lake. Both of these Oakland County all sports lakes are big enough to water ski and tube on. Square Lake is the smaller of the two lakes. You will find more room to jet ski and pull somebody around on Upper Long Lake.
If I had to generalize lake homes in Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township I would call them bigger luxury homes. On the average I would say many of the lake houses are 3000 square feet or bigger. Mainly in the 3000 square foot to 5000 square foot range. They are mainly built from the 1950's to the present day. You won't find old small cottages in the Hills or the Township. Land is just too valuable. All the old cottages were torn down years ago. I would say the small lake home is usually over 1500 square feet.
Many of the lake homes are custom built to the home owners desires. You will find custom built luxury estate homes ranging over 10,000 square feet on the local lakes. Bloomfield Hills and Bloomfield Township homes are very desirable because they fall in Birmingham and Bloomfield Hills school districts. These two school districts always rank high on state tests. Excellent teachers, great curriculum, and parents that expect their children to go to college are just some of the reasons why the schools are so good.
Bloomfield's high demographics make the area highly desirable. There are only so many lakes and no new lakes being built. So lakefront property in Bloomfield is in high demand
